The Story:

A magical encounter during the COVID lockdown—a rare moment of stillness in an otherwise uncertain time. The ocean felt alive, brimming with energy, and in the midst of it all, this gentle green turtle and I shared a quiet connection. We locked eyes, each curious about the other. Perhaps it hadn’t seen a human here in months, and I had never experienced such a calm, unhurried meeting with one before.

This beach is usually bustling with beach goers, and home to many marine creatures, but that day felt different—serene, almost sacred. It was exactly the breather I needed (ironically, underwater), a moment of peace amidst the chaos of the world above.

Ever wonder why they’re called green turtles? Their herbivorous diet—mainly seagrasses and algae—gives their fat a greenish hue, inspiring their name. As nature’s "lawnmowers," they keep seagrass beds healthy, which in turn serves as a nursery for countless marine species.

When it finally swam away, it felt as if it were saying, My shift is over. Take care, go easy on yourself—this too shall pass. Like the seagrass nurseries, different opportunities will surge, even in uncertain times. And in fact it did. It was a zen turtle, or at least in my head.
