The Story:

Moray eels look mean—like sea creatures ready to strike upon seeing you. But though I can’t read fish minds yet, I can tell it was just chilling in its home.

More often than not, moray eels are misunderstood. They aren’t naturally aggressive, but their constant mouth opening and closing—just their way of breathing—exposes sharp teeth that give them an unfair reputation. And it doesn’t help that they have two jaws too. While they can deliver a powerful bite, they only do so when they feel threatened, just like many other marine animals.

To capture this shot, I had to get pretty close, using a 16-35mm lens. I stayed aware, calm, and respectful of its space—something all divers should practice. Many encounters where morays “attack” divers happen simply because the divers fail to read their surroundings.

The moray just reminds me not to jump to conclusions. Life is meant to be approached with both caution and understanding. Appearances can be deceiving—so what assumptions can you challenge today?

This fine art paper is extremely fragile and can tear. Please handle with care. Gloves are highly encouraged to avoid oils, rips or smudges on the print surface.
