The Story:

The eye is the window to the soul—and this octopus reflected mine.

Octopuses are nothing short of fascinating: three hearts, blue blood, and intelligence beyond belief. But what captivates me most is their adaptability—two-thirds of their neurons are in their arms, allowing them to multitask effortlessly.

I, too, was alert that day. It was my first time seeing this octopus and my first dive alone with my younger sister. A year prior, we had clashed during her training. So I was concerned about repeating behavior. But watching her joyfully explore while remaining attentive to my guidance was a defining moment in our bond.

I hadn’t expected this dive to be so meaningful. A birthday gift for her became a lesson for me. The speckles in the octopus’s eye reminded me of her—curious, joyful, yet cautious. Watching it move, adapt, and explore helped me process the dive, not just as an experience, but as a symbol of our evolving relationship; my sister was maturing and I was learning to let go.
